The North Allegheny Tigers ninth-grade team took a 19-1 record into its final game, hoping to finish with a 20-win season. They never got there. North Hills got in the way.
North Hills went on the road and knocked off North Allegheny, 47-39, on Friday afternoon. The game was close throughout but North Hills inched ahead and scored 12 of the final 17 points in the game.
Offense was at a premium in the first half and North Allegheny took a 21-18 lead into the break. Things got a little better for North Hills as the Indians held NA to six points in the third quarter and grabbed a 29-27 lead heading into the fourth.
North Hills opened up a five-point lead in the final few minutes before a North Allegheny 3-pointer cut the deficit to two. But Garrett Rojik answered with a 3-pointer to put North Hills back up by five. Liam Tracey and Jayden Smith both scored big baskets off drives down the stretch.
North Hills had plenty of balance in the win. Tracey had one of his best games of the season, scoring 13 points and Smith added 12. Abdiel Batiste-Padin hit two 3-pointers in the first half, had a crucial steal late and finished with 8 points. Rojik hit two big 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 6. Will Blass also had 6.
North Hills finishes its season Monday with a home game against Hampton. Game time is 3:30 at North Hills Senior High.
