The North Hills freshman boys basketball team had to work a little extra Thursday. It was worth it.
North Hills pulled out a 63-61 overtime victory against Shaler in a thrilling game at the Senior High School. It was the second win in the past three games for North Hills.
The game was a rollercoaster ride, with both teams going on runs. Shaler led by 12-2 in the early going before North Hills came back and took a 34-28 halftime lead. The Indians stepped on the gas and took a 51-39 lead into the fourth quarter before Shaler came back and went ahead by four late in the game.
Jayden Smith hit two big baskets in the last minute, the second a 3-pointer that gave North Hills a 58-57 lead. Shaler’s big man, Logan Bernesser, was fouled with four seconds left. He made the first free throw, to tie the score. But he missed the second and a shot by North Hills’ Will Blass from three-quarter court bounced off the rim.
Onto overtime the contest went. Shaler scored a three-point play after the overtime tip to take a 63-61 lead. Blass made two free throws before Smith hit another big 3-pointer to put North Hills ahead for good. Shaler had the last shot of the game, but it was off the mark and North Hills had the win.
Smith and Blass were a terrific one-two punch for North Hills. Smith scored 27 points and Blass added 25.
North Hills’ next game is Monday at Moon. The Indians play at Hampton next Wednesday before returning home Friday (Jan. 18) to play North Allegheny at 3:30 at the Senior High.
