Maiette, Greer named Student-Athletes of the Month
Alaina Maiette and Conor Greer have been named the Student-Athletes of the Month for December.Maiette, a senior on the girls' swimming & diving team, is a team captain this season and a starter. She is described by Coach Loutsenhizer as being “encouraging of teammates” and “a leader to the team.”Out of the pool, Maiette has a 3.8 GPA and is studying Veterinary Sciences at A.W. Beattie Career Center.Greer, a senior member of the boys' swimming & diving team, is also a captain. This season, he has already qualified to compete in the WPIAL Championships next month.In the classroom, Greer has posted a 3.8 GPA. His course load contains one CHS class and a pair of AP classes.Congratulations, Alaina and Conor, and good luck this winter!

Longtime North Hills School District employee Dennis "Dudas" Bohn was honored during halftime of the boys’ basketball game on Friday, Jan. 10, as a semifinalist for the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award. The award, created in 2019, honors the extraordinary and inspirational work of school support staff across the state.A member of our custodial and maintenance department, Dudas has worked for the district for 22 years and is the head caretaker for Martorelli Stadium.“Dudas is an integral part of our athletic community,” NHSD Director of Athletics Patrick Weber said. “He goes above and beyond for everyone he comes in contact with and we thank him for all he does for this district and our students.”Full and part-time non-teaching school employees are eligible to be nominated for the RISE Award and Dudas was nominated last fall.On Friday, he was awarded a certificate of achievement from the state and signed by Pennsylvania Departmen

The winter sports season is racing along. Here is an update on our teams' seasons as we approach the midway point of January:Girls' BasketballThe girls' varsity basketball team went 0-2 last week, dropping games against Pine-Richland and North Allegheny. The girls now own a 3-9 record this winter. The JV team picked up a win on Friday in a tightly contested game against North Allegheny.Boys' BasketballThe boys' varsity basketball team went 1-1 last week. The boys lost by two on the road against Fox Chapel before picking up a big section win against North Allegheny on Friday. They are now 3-10 this season but 2-4 in the section.GymnasticsVarsity gymnastics did not have a meet last week. The girls will compete in their final meet on January 23.Indoor TrackThe indoor track team traveled to Youngstown State for its first meet of the season. Here is a look at what our teams are doing:Girls' BasketballGirls' basketball entered last week with momentum after a huge win against Hampton over the holiday break. That momentum stalled against Seneca Valley, sending the girls to 3-7 this season (0-2 in the section).The JV team staged an exciting comeback in its matchup with the Raiders but came up just short of the victory.Boys' BasketballThe varsity boys' basketball team lost to Pine-RIchland at home on Friday. The loss was the fifth straight for the now 2-9 team. The boys are 1-3 in section play so far this season. The JV squad lost an overtime thriller against the Rams on Friday prior to the varsity game.GymnasticsThe gymnastics team competed in its first of two home meets this season on Saturday. Here is an early look at what our teams are doing:Girls' BasketballThe varsity basketball team played a couple of tightly contested games last week but came away with two losses. So far this season, the girls own a 2-3 record.Boys' BasketballThe boys' basketball team went 0-3 last week, losing games to Shaler Area, New Castle, and Knoch. Through the first two weeks of competition, the boys are 1-4.GymnasticsThe gymnastics team competed in the first meet of the season on Friday against Pine-Richland. More About Winter sports recap: December 2-8Information for boys' basketball tip-off tournament
On December 6 and December 7, the North Hills boys' basketball program will host its annual tip-off tournament.This year's tournament features Allderdice, Mt. Lebanon, and the Indians' day one opponent, Hampton. On Friday, North Hills will play Hampton at 6:30 (JV) and 8:00 (varsity).Saturday's matchups will depend upon Friday's outcomes, but games will be played at 12:00 and 1:30. Fans attending these events should be prepared to pay for tickets with cash or Venmo upon arrival. This is a booster-run event, so these payment methods will be accepted, while district passes will not be accepted.Please note that cash and Venmo will not be accepted to purchase tickets at other North Hills home basketball games this season. Tip-off tournament tickets on Friday and Saturday will be $5.Let's go North Hills!

Ashlyn Fazio and Kayden Lightner are the Student-Athletes of the Month for October.Fazio, a junior on the girls' volleyball team, was an anchor for her team this season. She collected her 500th career kill and was named to the Big 56 all-section second team.In the classroom, Fazio has excelled with a 3.8 GPA, while taking various CHS, AP, and honors courses.Lightner, a senior on the varsity cross country team, finished 17th in the WPIAL Championships last month, clinching a spot in the PIAA Championships. He was the first North Hills cross country runner to do so since 2018.Off the course, he has compiled an impressive 4.3 GPA and is currently acing a schedule that includes three AP classes. In addition, he has committed to the University of Virginia.Congratulations to Ashlyn and Kayden on their tremendous performances this fall!

On Monday, the Big 56 conference revealed its all-section football teams for the fall 2024 season.The North Hills football team had five student-athletes recognized for their outstanding seasons. Earning first-team honors were senior tight end Ryan Carey, senior linebacker Julius Green, junior defensive back Josiah Mathis, sophomore defensive tackle Jalil McKinley-Jones, and senior linebacker Dason Towler.In addition, five players earned second-team honors, including senior linebacker Logan Ilnicki, junior linebacker Joey Lutz, senior running back Jack Martin, senior defensive back Stephen Murphy, and senior guard Wesley Taylor.The Big 56 previously released its all-section teams for boys' and girls' soccer and girls' volleyball.Congratulations to all of our football all-section honorees!

North Hills boys' soccer coach Kyle Boggs was named 4A Section 3 Coach of the Year by the Big 56.In his second season leading the boys' soccer program, Boggs propelled the Indians to their first playoff appearance since 2016. With a 10-8 record in the regular season, the team earned the 12-seed in the WPIAL 4A bracket.Boggs then led North Hills to its first postseason win since 2014 and its first quarterfinal appearance since 1999 by knocking off the defending 4A champions in round one.The Big 56 released its all-section teams for boys' and girls' soccer and girls' volleyball on Thursday, where the boys' soccer team saw four players recognized in addition to Boggs.Congratulations to Coach Boggs on this tremendous honor and on a successful 2024 campaign!

On Thursday, the Big 56 conference released its all-section teams for boys' and girls' soccer and girls' volleyball.The North Hills girls' soccer and girls' volleyball teams each saw one player recognized on the Big 56's second team. In soccer, it was sophomore goalkeeper Delaney Amato, and for the volleyball team, it was junior hitter Ashlyn Fazio.The boys' soccer team had four student-athletes honored by the Big 56. The lone first-team player was senior defender Owen Mollenauer. The three second-team representatives were senior forward Zachary Fritz, senior midfielder Jack Scarsella, and sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Werner.In addition, boys' soccer coach Kyle Boggs was named the Section 3 Coach of the Year.Congratulations to all of our 2024 Big 56 all-section honorees!
