Kim set for WPIAL Girls' Tennis Championships
This Wednesday, junior Ellie Kim will play in the WPIAL Girls' Singles Championships.Ellie punched her ticket to this week's tournament thanks to a second-place finish at last week's section singles competition. Her high finish in the section tournament earned her the seven-seed out of the 16 girls competing this week.As the seven-seed, she will take on the tournament's 10-seed, a senior from Fox Chapel. If Ellie wins, she'll advance to play the winner of the 2v15 match in the quarterfinals.Play on Wednesday begins at 11:00 AM at North Allegheny High School. Good luck, Ellie!

Here is a look at where the teams at North Hills stand.Cross CountryVarsity cross country traveled to Shaler Area last Tuesday for its lone meet of the week. The boys' team cruised to wins over Shaler Area and Central Catholic, while the girls' team beat Shaler Area and lost to Oakland Catholic.FootballThe varsity football team put their unblemished record on the line last Friday when it traveled to Pine-Richland. The Indians battled back from a 17-point deficit, but they ultimately fell to the Rams, 29-24. The team is now 3-1 on the season.Golf The varsity golf team played a pair of matches last week against Hampton and Highlands. On Wednesday, junior Ellie Kim competed in the section singles tournament and punched her ticket to the 2024 WPIAL Girls' Tennis Singles Championships.During the section singles competition, Ellie needed to finish in the top four to secure a place in next week's WPIAL competition. Not only did she successfully reach the final four, but she won her semifinal match to advance to the final.While a loss in straight sets on Thursday morning prevented her from claiming first place in the section, she will have an opportunity to compete for the top spot in the WPIAL next week. The WPIAL Singles Championships begin on Wednesday, September 18.Congratulations, Ellie, and good luck next week!

Fall sports are here, and the first week of September is in the books. Here’s a look at how the beginning of the season has gone. Cross Country The varsity cross country team opened its season over the weekend with the Red, White, and Blue Invitational. The boys finished in 10th place out of 72 teams, while the girls finished 17th out of 63. Football Varsity football picked up its third consecutive win last Friday when the team traveled to Mars and pulled off a 21-17 comeback win. The Indians will take their undefeated record into conference play this week when they travel to Pine-Richland. Golf The varsity golf team continued its strong season last week with one of its lowest scores of the fall in a win against Highlands. The boys have consistently hovered around .500 throughout the season so far. North Hills varsity football will take on Hempfield in the season opener at Martorelli Stadium on Friday, Aug. 23. It's also Youth Night and middle school and youth football teams and cheerleaders will be recognized prior to kick-off at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the gate but MUST BE purchased online. The North Hills Athletic Department is continuing its partnership with HomeTown Ticketing for cashless ticketing to all home athletic events for the 2024-25 school year. Tickets to ALL home athletic events must be purchased online. There is no cash option. Tickets will be scanned at the gate or door for admission. Fans can print their tickets or simply show the ticket QR code from their device. All single-game tickets will be general admission and cost $5 plus a $1.49 service fee. To avoid the fee, fans are encouraged to take advantage of the all-sport Flex Pass. The Flex Pass can be purchased and loaded with 5,15 and 25 tickets, or scans, that can be used at a single athletic event or multiple events throughout the school year. Reserved season tickets for the 2024 football season will go on sale at 10 a.m. on August 8 through HomeTown Ticketing. This is for reserved seats only. The cost for all five home games is $50. Reserved season tickets are not valid for WPIAL or PIAA events at Martorelli Stadium. General admission tickets with open seating can be purchased via HomeTown Ticketing beginning August 15 as detailed here.

The fall sports season will be here in no time, and for those who intend to play a sport at North Hills, it is never too early to start taking care of physicals and forms. Sports offered by North Hills in the fall include cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. The complete list of boys’ and girls’ varsity, JV, and middle school sports, along with contact information for each team’s head coach, can be found on the Coach Directory page. Any student planning to participate in the fall will need a sports physical, which can be completed now (must be after May 1 each year) and must be completed before participating in any capacity in the fall. After earning silver medals in both the WPIAL and PIAA Individual Championships, junior Kayden Lightner has earned another honor. The Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association released all-state teams for cross country and indoor track earlier this year. Now, the teams for the outdoor track and field season have been unveiled, and Kayden was named to the third team. This third team designation speaks to Kayden’s standing across the state. He earned the honor in the 800-meter dash, where Kayden set and broke his own school record on multiple occasions throughout the 2023-2024 school year. Connor Davis and Gianna Reed have been named May’s Student-Athletes of the Month. Davis, a senior on the boys’ baseball team, helped guide the Indians to a section championship and a first-round postseason bye this spring. In recognition of his efforts, Davis earned Big 56 All-Section Honorable Mention honors. In the classroom, Davis has continued to excel, posting a 3.9 GPA while taking a challenging course load that features two CHS classes and an AP class. Reed, a senior on the girls’ lacrosse team, served as a team captain for the 2024 season. She anchored the playoff-bound Indians’ defense and tallied her 550th career save last month.
