Fazio, Lightner named Student-Athletes of the Month
Ashlyn Fazio and Kayden Lightner are the Student-Athletes of the Month for October.Fazio, a junior on the girls' volleyball team, was an anchor for her team this season. She collected her 500th career kill and was named to the Big 56 all-section second team.In the classroom, Fazio has excelled with a 3.8 GPA, while taking various CHS, AP, and honors courses.Lightner, a senior on the varsity cross country team, finished 17th in the WPIAL Championships last month, clinching a spot in the PIAA Championships. He was the first North Hills cross country runner to do so since 2018.Off the course, he has compiled an impressive 4.3 GPA and is currently acing a schedule that includes three AP classes. In addition, he has committed to the University of Virginia.Congratulations to Ashlyn and Kayden on their tremendous performances this fall!

On Monday, the Big 56 conference revealed its all-section football teams for the fall 2024 season.The North Hills football team had five student-athletes recognized for their outstanding seasons. Earning first-team honors were senior tight end Ryan Carey, senior linebacker Julius Green, junior defensive back Josiah Mathis, sophomore defensive tackle Jalil McKinley-Jones, and senior linebacker Dason Towler.In addition, five players earned second-team honors, including senior linebacker Logan Ilnicki, junior linebacker Joey Lutz, senior running back Jack Martin, senior defensive back Stephen Murphy, and senior guard Wesley Taylor.The Big 56 previously released its all-section teams for boys' and girls' soccer and girls' volleyball.Congratulations to all of our football all-section honorees!

North Hills boys' soccer coach Kyle Boggs was named 4A Section 3 Coach of the Year by the Big 56.In his second season leading the boys' soccer program, Boggs propelled the Indians to their first playoff appearance since 2016. With a 10-8 record in the regular season, the team earned the 12-seed in the WPIAL 4A bracket.Boggs then led North Hills to its first postseason win since 2014 and its first quarterfinal appearance since 1999 by knocking off the defending 4A champions in round one.The Big 56 released its all-section teams for boys' and girls' soccer and girls' volleyball on Thursday, where the boys' soccer team saw four players recognized in addition to Boggs.Congratulations to Coach Boggs on this tremendous honor and on a successful 2024 campaign!

On Thursday, the Big 56 conference released its all-section teams for boys' and girls' soccer and girls' volleyball.The North Hills girls' soccer and girls' volleyball teams each saw one player recognized on the Big 56's second team. In soccer, it was sophomore goalkeeper Delaney Amato, and for the volleyball team, it was junior hitter Ashlyn Fazio.The boys' soccer team had four student-athletes honored by the Big 56. The lone first-team player was senior defender Owen Mollenauer. The three second-team representatives were senior forward Zachary Fritz, senior midfielder Jack Scarsella, and sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Werner.In addition, boys' soccer coach Kyle Boggs was named the Section 3 Coach of the Year.Congratulations to all of our 2024 Big 56 all-section honorees!

Over the weekend, senior Kayden Lightner traveled to Hershey to run in the PIAA Cross Country Championships.Lightner, a silver medalist in the 2024 PIAA Track & Field Championships, was making his first appearance in the cross country state meet. He was the first North Hills qualifier since 2018.Kayden entered the meet coming off a 17th place finish in the WPIAL Championships. In the field of 250 runners in Hershey, he finished in a time of 17:35, which was 15 seconds outside of the top 100.Reaching the PIAA Championships is a tremendous feat. Congratulations, Kayden, on a great fall season!

After an impressive 8-2 regular season for the North Hills varsity football team, the season has come to an end after a first-round defeat.The Indians hosted their first-round playoff matchup as the eight-seed in the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs. Their opponent, Franklin Regional, was the nine-seed (7-3).North Hills struck first on a long touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead, but Franklin Regional answered back with a touchdown and a field goal and took a 10-7 lead into halftime.A second Indians touchdown and a safety by the defense gave North Hills a 16-10 edge in the fourth quarter. But Franklin Regional was able to strike late for their second touchdown of the game and eventually won 17-16 to advance to the quarterfinals.For North Hills, the loss is a difficult ending to an otherwise impressive season. Despite failing to advance, the 2024 campaign was an exciting one for the Indians. Thank you for a great season!

The No. 8 seeded North Hills Indians will host Franklin Regional, the No. 9 seed, in the first round of the WPIAL 5A football playoffs at Martorelli Stadium on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.Please remember, this is a WPIAL event so North Hills passes will not be accepted. This includes student, staff, season, flex and senior citizen passes. ALL fans must purchase a ticket through GoFan for $5 for students and $7 for adults. Tickets at the gate must also be purchased online. There will be no cash sales.Gates will open for Friday's game at 5:30 p.m. The game is the Pittsburgh Steelersโ High School Showcase Game of the Week and will be available to watch for fans unable to attend in person.

Last Thursday, the North Hills cross country teams ran at the WPIAL Championships at White Oak Park, and both the boys and girls improved upon their results from last fall. The girls finished in 16th while cutting 50 points off their score from a year ago. The top five finished over 30 seconds better on average, and five out of seven runners finished with personal bests. Megan Bolinda was the top finisher for the girls.Meanwhile, the boys' team improved to 10th place this year, shaving 92 points off last year's score. The top five runners cut more than 50 seconds off of their times on average, with four out of six runners setting personal bests. The boys were paced by Kayden Lightner, who finished 17th and earned a spot in the PIAA Championships in Hershey on Saturday, November 2. On Saturday, the boys' soccer team took on North Allegheny in a WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal matchup.After upsetting the defending champion Norwin Knights in round one, North Hills faced the Tigers for the third time this season.Unlike Tuesday's action against the Knights, goals were difficult to come by in Saturday's tilt. The first half was scoreless, and it wasn't until half of the time had expired in the second half that North Allegheny broke through to take a 1-0 lead.The Indians had a few opportunities as the game went on to find the equalizer but were unable to convert. In the end, it was a 1-0 final score in favor of the Tigers.The loss brings to an end one of the most successful seasons in North Hills boys' soccer history. This fall, the team reached the playoffs for the first time since 2016, won a playoff game for the first time since 2014, and reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 1999.While it would have been great to see this run continue, the success of the 2

The varsity football team will conclude its regular season on Friday, October 25, when it travels to Central Valley.North Hills enters the game with a 7-2 record, currently in third place in the section. While Friday night's game is a non-section contest, it could have playoff implications, as will many other games across class 5A.Friday's game starts at 7:00 at Sarge Alberts Stadium. All tickets sold at the gate will be $5. Also, for those who are unable to attend the game in person, there will be a live stream available via the Central Valley Sports Network.Good luck, boys!
