Boys' soccer team stuns Norwin in round one
Updated on 10/23/2024

Last year, the Norwin Knights boys' soccer team won a WPIAL title. This year, they're out in round one at the hands of the North Hills Indians.

Tuesday night's matchup featured the five-seed Knights and the 12-seed Indians. North Hills, making its first playoff appearance since 2016, was searching for its first postseason win since the 2014 play-in round.

The game began with a Norwin goal, but North Hills answered shortly after, courtesy of a penalty kick. The Indians put another goal home later in the half to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Norwin came out strong in the second half, but North Hills fended them off for over 20 minutes. But eventually, the defending champs scored the equalizer, and the game seemed destined for extra time.

That was until the scramble in front of Norwin's net.

North Hills chipped the ball around the goaltender and toward the goal line. With three players crashing the net, the ball crossed the line with two seconds remaining to give North Hills a 3-2 lead.

When the final horn sounded, the 2023 champions were eliminated, and the 12-seed was on to the next round. This is the first time since 1999 that North Hills has advanced to the quarterfinals. That season, they advanced to the WPIAL final and, eventually, the state tournament.

With the win, North Hills advances to face off against North Allegheny on Saturday, October 26. The Tigers, the tournament's four-seed, won both regular season meetings against North Hills this season.

Congratulations on a thrilling win, and good luck in the quarterfinals!
